Squid: Brett Oliver Baldridge

Squid: Brett Oliver Baldridge

Mira Costa College, being in such close proximity to the ocean, needs to share or be a part of that separate entity in some other way than by being in association with OCEANside. Thus by using the similar ideas of California artist and sculpture Valentin this squid would bring an energy and dynamic that will portray the beauty and power of the neighboring ocean. Valentin uses similar expression of the soul, only being more influenced by the human soul where as this piece captures the being of the ocean. Illuminating students minds, by sparking their creativity and curiosity about the endless sea just beyond the concrete freeway creating a scholastic interest in the piece. By placing the piece in a field of grass it will give the impression of the sea, sharing some colors such as green with its natural habitat. Also by using metal as the resource for material, the piece will not come off as pressing or unordinary but rather subtle and sufficient for creative inspection. The piece is classic and will be weather worthy, allowing for the school to enjoy its presence for as long as it is desired.

  1. This is an awesome idea. I took many pictures of trees and branches but didn't come up with anything. I was trying to use the branches as the winding roads we have to choose from. The squid has similar attributes with the tentacles.

  2. I like the unique Idea, but one question:
how will it stay floating in midair?
unless you in your creative genious have made a pedestal that perfectly blends in with the grass
    very nice job

  4. I think this is a good idea cause how close we are to the ocean. How does it stand though? Other than that its really creative.

  9. The metal squid would blend with the existing sculptures at the school, and the theme of the school (Mira Costa: looking at the ocean). Nice.

  11. Metal is a great idea for the squid sculpture. Would it be a type of metal that weathers/oxidizes, like bronze, so the environment would change it over time? That would be nice.--Heather

  12. That's awesome if you can really figure out a way to make it look like it's floating in real life. Maybe if only one tentacle were touching the ground, it would give the proper affect.-Justin
